Japan, S. Korea, Taiwan consider collaborating on U.S. LNG project

TOKYO - Japan, South Korea and Taiwan are considering collaborating on a feasibility study for the $44 billion Alaska liquefied natural gas project in the United States, sources familiar with the matter said Saturday.

While U.S. President Donald Trump has expressed expectations for investments from the three economies, they believe their possible participation in the project could be used as a bargaining chip in U.S. tariff negotiations.

Trump says tariff deal with Japan "very close" to completion

WASHINGTON - President Donald Trump said Friday that the United States is "very close" to a deal with Japan as the two countries continue talks over U.S. tariffs.

His remarks came as Ryosei Akazawa, Japan's chief representative in tariff negotiations with the U.S. administration, is set to make a three-day trip to Washington from Wednesday for a second round of talks.

World Expo in Osaka tops 1 mil. visitors in first 13 days

TOKYO - The number of visitors to the World Exposition in Osaka topped 1 million on Friday, the 13th day of the event, organizers said.

A total of some 1.02 million people visited ahead of Japan's Golden Week holiday period which started Saturday. Organizers have targeted attracting over 28 million visitors for the six-month event through Oct. 13 on Yumeshima, an artificial island in Osaka Bay.

N. Korea's Kim attends launch ceremony of new navy destroyer

BEIJING - North Korean leader Kim Jong Un attended a ceremony for the launch of a new 5,000-ton destroyer at a shipyard in the western port city of Nampho, the country's state media reported Saturday, saying the event marks a "breakthrough in modernization" of the navy.

At the ceremony on Friday, held on the 93rd anniversary of the North Korean army's founding, Kim said the multipurpose warship equipped with systems to launch supersonic cruise missiles and strategic ballistic missiles will be deployed by the navy possibly next year, according to the official Korean Central News Agency.

Rugby: Steelers book League One playoff spot with win over Dynaboars

HIGASHIOSAKA, Japan - The Kobe Steelers secured a place in the playoffs for the first time when they ran in nine tries to beat the Sagamihara Dynaboars 59-33 in Japan Rugby League One on Saturday.

The win guaranteed the fifth-place Steelers a top-six finish as they improved to a 9-7 record and 46 points. The ninth-place Dynaboars dropped to 6-10 with 26 points.

Baseball: Dodgers' Yamamoto takes loss as Skenes gem powers Pirates

LOS ANGELES - Yoshinobu Yamamoto allowed three runs, one earned, in five innings and was tagged with a loss as a pitching gem from Paul Skenes propelled the Pittsburgh Pirates to a 3-0 win over the Los Angeles Dodgers on Friday.

In a highly anticipated matchup between star right-handers both in their second Major League Baseball seasons, Yamamoto (3-2) walked four, his most in the big leagues, allowed five hits and struck out as many.

Toyota founding family mulls buyout of Toyota Industries

NAGOYA - The founding family of the Toyota Motor Corp. group has made a takeover proposal to affiliate Toyota Industries Corp. whose market capitalization exceeds 4 trillion yen ($28 billion), sources close to the matter said Friday.

The members of the family including Toyota Motor Chairman Akio Toyoda are proposing to purchase Toyota Industries shares they do not yet own in a tender offer, with major lenders helping finance the deal, according to the sources.

Exposure to 1-minute sound may prevent motion sickness: Japan team

NAGOYA - People suffering from motion sickness may be able to prevent their symptoms from developing just by listening to a minute of special sound, a Japanese research team said.

The research found a sound at 100 hertz stimulates the inner ear and helps to reduce motion sickness by improving balance, the team said, while current preventive measures are largely limited to taking medicines.
