's to Fire Staffer Who Allied Students Good Grades To Build Citizens' Voice Staff Writer A King's College professor who claims he has been asked to compromise his integrity and academic freedom in exchange for a renewal of his contract has begun a "work stoppage" in protest of the position taken by the college administration. Assistant Professor Joseph Dwyer said he was notified 1dc this week his contract will not be renewed and that he will be dismissed as of May 20, the end of the Spring semester. The criminal justice profesE sor dismissed claims he because is of being the VOICE, Dean "I grades was Denton issued called May, his to the Jan. students. office 25.

Most of Dwyer's nearly 200 students and many others at King's have rallied to the support of the first-year professor. Signs in support of Dwyer hang from several buildings near the campus and petitions asking that he be retained are being circulated. The students say they have tried to talk to Dr.

May about Dwyer's dismissal, but have not been able to get into the dean's office. "He's always out to lunch," commented one last criminal justice student. Contacted by the Citizens' Voice, Dr. May said he would not comment on Dwyer's status at the liberal arts institution. "It wouldn't be fair to Mr.

Dwyer," May stated. Dwyer said he told his students he has begun a "work stoppage" until the matter is resolved. "I won't resign. Not right now. That is what they would want.

If I resign, I won't have the chance to expose what is going on here." Dwyer feels the college administration expects him to grade by a quota system. "I asked Dr. May if he expected a quota system, but he wouldn't answer me. I refuse to grade by quota. A quota system is a gross violation of human rights." The criminal justice professor came to King's last August following a 21-year career in law enforcement.

He was a member of the Boston Police Department for 10 years and spent another 11 years on the Massachusetts State Police as a detective lieutenant inspector. He holds a bachelor of science from Northeastern University, Boston, and a master's degree from Boston University. While Dwyer spoke in the Susquehanna dining room of the college, nearly a dozen students were circulating petitions in his support. "The students are behind me. relocate from the proposed NPW site in Plains Township is not the result of the ongoing controversy surrounding the $35 million NPW project. At a meeting of the Northern Luzerne Area Health Council of the Health Systems Agency Wednesday, Ed Butkiewicz, council member, stated the controversy was the reason Allied opted for the new location. However, -following the meeting, Jean Lukasiewicz, HSA staff representative, said Allied officials didn't state a reason as to why they were relocating. George Walters, president, Allied Services, Scranton, said Thursday the NPW controversy had nothing to do with Allied's decision to relocate. Walters said Allied made the change because it was able to purchase 14 acres of land at a lower cost than the NPW site.

The new site will be located on Fox Hill Road, Plains Township, directly across from the side entrance of ones Pocono Downs. The alternate area is located a short distance from the NPW site. has "With this new site we're gowhen ing to save substantial he amounts of money in the area of site Walters noted. "This consideration was one of several which prompted the move. It was not strictly made from a business position." Walters emphasized that plans haven't been finalized on the new site.

He said Allied was still seeking an option on the alternate site. Another plus for the move, the Allied president explained, was the Fox Hill Road site is more level than the NPW area. This will mean the unit will be built as a one-story structure as opposed to a larger building on the NPW site. Walters emphasized the alternate site is more accessible than the NPW project area and noted that Allied was never a part of NPW. Walters said the unit will contain just under 100 beds and will cost approximately $12 million to construct.

He added the project should be completed by 1981 and will employ 300 with an annual payroll between $4-5 million. The unit, Walters said, will be in a strategic position in Plains to serve many from surrounding counties. Walters said the proposed project is not a nursing home facility but an "institute of rehabilitation The Allied president said the unit will treat patients afflicted with such things as arthritis and persons who suffered a stroke.
